About the Haitian migrants from Texas

The United States has launched a mass expulsion of Haitian migrants from Texas. More than 320 migrants arrived in Port-au-Prince on three flights, and Haiti stated that six more flights were expected on Tuesday. In total, U.S. authorities have taken steps to expel many of the more than 12,000 migrants who had been camped around a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, after crossing from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. The U.S. plans to initiate seven expulsion flights daily starting on Wednesday, with four heading to Port-au-Prince and three to Cap-Haitien, as reported by a U.S. official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. Flights will continue to depart from San Antonio, and authorities may potentially add El Paso to the departure locations, according to the official. The only obvious parallel for such an expulsion without an opportunity to seek asylum was in 1992 when the Coast Guard intercepted Haitian refugees at sea, as noted by Yael Schacher, senior U.S. advocate at Refugees International, whose doctoral studies focused on the history of U.S. asylum law.
