Day Clinic – Bringing Healthcare to Rural Communities in Haiti

Day Clinic – Bringing Healthcare to Rural Communities in Haiti

It is unrealistic to expect people living in rural areas to walk or travel on donkeys for hours to receive routine healthcare. In rural areas, people live in close quarters, which increases the spread of diseases. The lack of medicines, equipment, and severe shortages of doctors and nurses pose a severe threat to their lives.

Every day, millions of lives are impacted by one of the world’s highest rates of maternal and child death. Shockingly, women die during and after childbirth, while their children lack the basic medical attention needed for healthy development. Seventy percent of people in Haiti, particularly in rural areas, have limited access to basic healthcare services, leaving them vulnerable to illnesses such as cholera, tapeworms, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.

Despite the daunting nature of this problem, NY Friends of Haiti 2010 (NYFOH) has undertaken several community projects to address the healthcare crisis. Every year, we invite dedicated medical personnel, doctors, and nurses to travel with us to remote towns to set up day clinics. These clinics provide physicals, distribute medications and vitamins to children with deficiencies, and offer basic triage skills, eye checks, blood pressure screenings, diabetes management, and much more. NY Friends of Haiti 2010 reaches out to medical professionals, hospitals, and corporations to help fund this project.

What can you do to help keep this project going? We are in need of the following items:

  • Hospital beds
  • Medical supplies
  • Eyeglasses
  • Children’s vitamins
  • Medications
