13HRS RADIOTHON – Rebuilding Haiti: Reflections on the SOS Radioton

In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12th, 2010, leaving its capital Port-au-Prince devastated and claiming the lives of approximately 220,000 individuals, NYFOH sprang into action. Collaborating with numerous Haitian radio stations and organizations, we organized a Radiothon to provide immediate assistance to our compatriots back home.

The purpose of the event was to raise funds and collect essential goods such as non-perishable goods, food, and clothing, first aid kits, including baby clothes, for the victims. Recognizing the significance of that date as one of the darkest nights in our history, we rallied our community to stand together in unity, embodying the strength represented by our flag emblem “L’union fait la force”, meaning “Unity makes strength”.

The main location for the Radioton was the T-Building at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Through the unwavering support and generosity of our community, we were able to gather first aid kits, clothing, food, and other essential items to send to Haiti.

Together, we stood in solidarity, offering our support and assistance to rebuild and uplift those affected by the tragedy. This event served as a testament to the resilience and unity of the Haitian people in the face of adversity.
